Excuses for Not Standing in Obligatory Prayers / Sami Bin Mohammed Al Suqair
The objective of this study is to explain the excuses for not standing in obligatory prayers. The study defines prayer’s standing
position as well as other positions. It identifies when one is licensed not to stand, and it identifies related issues. The study concludes that
standing in obligatory prayer is compulsory for the able worshipper. Also, different rulings apply to different situations, where some
positions are permissible while others are not. Exemption from standing applies to the situation which deprives the worshipper of serenity in
prayer. In case the excuse occurs during prayer, one is licensed to complete prayer in the sitting position.
